Leonardo DiCaprio Confesses He Never Watched Titanic

Leonardo DiCaprio said he has never seen Titanic, the blockbuster that launched his career.

The Confession

During a conversation for CNN and Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series on Dec. 17, DiCaprio told Jennifer Lawrence, “I haven’t seen it before.” He added, “I don’t really watch my films.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s Response

Lawrence, 35, said she rarely watches her own work. She encouraged DiCaprio, saying, “I bet you could watch it now, it’s so good.”

Titanic’s Impact on DiCaprio

Although he never sat through the full three hours and 15 minutes, DiCaprio was 22 when Titanic was released. In a 2016 interview with Deadline, he recalled, “People said, ‘Do you realize how big of a movie this is?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s big. It’s a big movie.’ They’re like, ‘No. No. No, it’s the biggest movie ever.’”

Career Choices After Titanic

DiCaprio said he had forged exactly the type of films he wanted to do. He used his fame to make R‑rated, different kinds of movies and to take risks on projects he wanted to act in. He added that he’d never had that opportunity before Titanic.

He expressed regret about missing Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 debut Boogie Nights, saying, “The dilemma for me at that point, was, of course, I would’ve loved to have done both movies,” to Deadline earlier this year.

New Project: One Battle After Another

DiCaprio is now starring in Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” with Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti. At the film’s premiere in September, he told E! News, “Paul’s been tinkering around with the story for 20 years. It’s really an unpredictable odyssey. There’s so many deceptive characters in this movie, there’s so many interesting layers to it. But it’s this insane sort of action comedy that has so many incredible actors but the heart of it is about a father trying to get back to his daughter.”

Kate Winslet’s Reflections

Kate Winslet reflected on being thrust into the spotlight after her first Oscar nomination at 19 and shared untold stories from filming iconic roles, including a set malfunction on Titanic, working with Jack Black in The Holiday, and a motivating female figure from her newest film Lee.

Key Takeaways

  • DiCaprio has never watched Titanic despite its massive success.
  • He used Titanic’s fame to pursue R‑rated and experimental films.
  • He is now leading in Anderson’s new film, One Battle After Another.

DiCaprio’s candid admission underscores how a blockbuster can shape a star’s path, even when the star never sees the film itself.
