Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, leaving her childhood friend Megan Shirley grieving and questioning the official account of the incident.
“A Safe Friend You Could Trust”
“[Good] was one of those people, genuinely, you could be yourself around and she would keep your secrets and you could trust her,” Shirley told News Of Losangeles. “And when I think about her, I really just remember feeling like she was a safe friend for me.”
The two attended elementary and middle school together, where they bonded over music and writing. They even formed a band called Ivy, creating songs that showcased Good’s way with words.
“She was really good with words, which it didn’t surprise me when I did read that she had won a poetry award later on in life because she was doing it even back then,” Shirley recalled.
The Fatal Encounter
Good had recently relocated to the Twin Cities with her wife when ICE agents approached her. Multiple videos captured the interaction and subsequent shooting by agent Jonathan Ross as Good maneuvered her Honda Pilot.
After the shots were fired, Good’s vehicle continued moving up the street before crashing into a parked car. The Department of Homeland Security initially claimed Good had “weaponized her vehicle” and that Ross acted in self-defense.
Doubt Emerges
The official narrative quickly faced scrutiny. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey dismissed DHS’s claim as “bulls-” after reviewing the footage.
Shirley similarly rejects the idea that her friend intended harm.
“There’s no way,” she said. “I really think it was fight or flight type of situation where she was in fight or flight mode and she kind of took off. And I don’t think that it would’ve been on purpose for trying to hurt anyone with her car.”

A Life Cut Short
Good leaves behind three children and a wife who had recently started their new life in Minneapolis. Her death has devastated those who knew her best.
“She didn’t deserve what happened to her,” Shirley said. “And she would’ve brought a lot of good into the world if she was allowed to be here a little bit longer.”
The childhood friend described learning about Good’s death as “surreal,” seeing her old friend’s picture on the news serving as a painful reminder of their lost connection.
