Tammy Slaton has secured her first paid position since shedding 500 lbs., accepting a volunteer role at the Vanderburgh Humane Society, according to an exclusive clip shared by News Of Losangeles.
The 39-year-old 1000-Lb. Sisters star describes the opportunity as her “first real job” after years of health-related unemployment. In the upcoming episode airing Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 9PM ET/PT, cameras follow Tammy as she receives the news and begins orientation at the Evansville, Indiana, shelter.
A New Chapter
“A few days ago I got the call. I’m officially hired as a volunteer,” Tammy says in the clip. “I’m so excited. I get to go to the animal shelter and volunteer.”
The milestone marks a dramatic shift for Tammy, who previously required round-the-clock care and was unable to maintain employment. Since undergoing bariatric surgery and documenting her weight-loss journey on the TLC series, she has regained mobility and independence.
“I’m really nervous because it’s my first real job. I’m also really happy,” she adds. “I’m adulting. That’s what it is.”
Mixed Emotions
While celebrating the achievement, Tammy admits the moment feels incomplete without her sister Amy. The siblings’ relationship fractured after a heated confrontation last season, and they remain estranged.
“Working with animals, it’s exciting. And I think something like this could help Amy in many ways,” Tammy says during a confessional. “But Amy and I still aren’t talking, so she isn’t willing to experience this with me.”
Tammy still acknowledges her sister’s love for animals, joking about Amy’s 2024 camel bite at Tennessee Safari Park. “I know she loves animals…well, other than camels,” she quips.
First Day Perks
Before training begins, staff present Tammy with a green “Shelter Squad” T-shirt, symbolizing her official entry into the workforce. She beams while holding up the shirt, reveling in the exclusive accessory.

“I got something my family don’t have. Volunteer cred!” she exclaims. “Only place they would volunteer is an eating contest,” she adds, laughing.
The Vanderburgh Humane Society relies on volunteers for animal care, adoption events, and facility upkeep. Tammy’s role will reportedly involve cleaning kennels, socializing cats, and assisting potential adopters.
Why It Matters
Tammy’s employment signals a major step toward sustained independence after her medical transformation. Securing a job not only provides structure and purpose but also reinforces the lifestyle changes necessary to maintain her weight loss.
Viewers can watch Tammy’s first day unfold on the next 1000-Lb. Sisters episode, Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 9PM ET/PT on TLC.
