- Why it matters: A rare Hollywood story where a star’s mistake became a cherished memory
Kristin Davis once mistook Tom Cruise for a random “dude” blocking her path to a group photo with her Sex and the City costars, she told News Of Losangeles at the Golden Globes’ Golden Eve event on Jan. 6.
The 2004 Mix-Up
Davis, now 60, recalled rushing down the press line to join Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall for the shot HBO demanded every year. She had just watched The Last Samurai, in which Cruise sported long hair, and did not know he had since cut it short.
“I’m hurrying down the press line to join the other three, and I see that they’re talking to some dude,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Why is there a guy in my spot?'”
Assuming the man was a talent agent, she marched up behind him, grabbed his arm and “jumped up and down like I’m trying to rip his arm out of his shoulder blade.” When he turned around, she realized it was Cruise.
The Embarrassing Exchange
“Really stupidly, I say, ‘I didn’t recognize you,'” Davis remembered. “He says, ‘You didn’t recognize me?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, I just watched The Samurai and your hair was long.'”
Despite her mortification, Cruise remained gracious. “He was so incredibly nice,” she said. “We all took pictures and he told us all how much he loved the show.”
In the two decades since, Davis has run into Cruise again and confirmed “he’s super sweet.”

And Just Like That… Finale
At the same event, where Davis presented Parker with the Carol Burnett Award, she addressed HBO Max’s announcement that And Just Like That… will not return for a fourth season. The revival’s third-season finale, aired in August, served as an unexpected series finale.
When asked if the conclusion closed the chapter for her, Davis replied, “No.”
The spinoff, which premiered in December 2021, followed Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte 10 years after Sex and the City 2. Kim Cattrall appeared only for a single-episode cameo.
