Clean Your Air Fryer Now or Risk Ruining Dinner

  • Air fryers need cleaning after every few uses to prevent buildup
  • Built-up residue can catch fire on heating coils if ignored
  • Simple 3-step process takes under 15 minutes

Why it matters: Regular cleaning keeps your air fryer safe and your food tasting great.

Air fryers have become kitchen favorites for quick, crispy meals with minimal mess. But without regular cleaning, these appliances can turn from helpful to hazardous. Food particles and oil residue build up quickly, especially with frequent use.

Most models have numerous crevices and compartments – particularly those with removable baskets – that trap debris. While cleaning takes more effort than washing a simple pan, it’s far easier than tackling a full-size oven and essential for both performance and safety.

What You’ll Need

  • Soap
  • Paper towels
  • Sponge or dishcloth
  • Disinfectant wipe or Magic Eraser

Step 1: Clean the Exterior

Before starting, unplug your appliance. Remove any food scraps congealing inside or outside the unit. Wad newspapers or paper towels into a ball and wipe down the entire air fryer – inside and out – to remove built-up residue.

Go over the outside, including the button area, with a disinfectant wipe or Magic Eraser. This removes residual oil and dust that accumulates during cooking.

Step 2: Wash Removable Parts

Remove the pan and basket (some models also have a tray) and wash with warm, soapy water. Most pieces are dishwasher-safe, but always check your manual first. If dishwasher-safe, place on the top rack during a normal cycle.

For hand-washing, let pieces soak in warm, soapy water before wiping with a sponge or dishcloth. Rinse with warm water and set aside to dry.

Step 3: Scrub Interior and Coils

Clean the heating element inside your air fryer and the areas around where the basket sits. Never put your air fryer under running water or use cleansers that need rinsing – even wiping with a moist cloth afterward won’t remove all cleanser residue.

If gunk sticks to the heating element, scrub with an old toothbrush or soft-bristled cleaning brush. Avoid anything more abrasive to prevent scratches on this critical component.

Safety note: Residue on coils can catch fire, making this cleaning step crucial for kitchen safety.

Once everything is clean and dry, reassemble the pan and basket. Your air fryer is ready for the next delicious meal.
