The It Ends with Us author shared the update via her Instagram Stories on Monday, Jan. 12, posting: “Second to last day of radiation. I wish I could blame my hair and facial expressions on @Texas.Oncology, but they’ve been great. Hope you never need them, but highly recommend them.”

Diagnosis and Treatment Journey

Hoover first revealed her cancer diagnosis in December through her private fan Facebook page. At that time, she confirmed she had undergone surgery to remove the cancer and would require radiation therapy but no chemotherapy.

The author explained she had been experiencing “recurring” health issues while filming Reminders of Him, her forthcoming movie adaptation. “I continued to put off until the movie was finished,” she wrote.

In her initial announcement, Hoover acknowledged the emotional impact: “So while it felt huge and scary for a bit, and I had to miss out on the Regretting You premiere and some other important career and personal moment, I just wasn’t ready to share with anyone until I knew what the outcome would be.”

Previous Health Indicators

Months before sharing her diagnosis, Hoover hinted at health challenges. On Oct. 17, she announced she would skip multiple work events, including the Regretting You premiere.

“I’m super bummed, but am having an unavoidable surgery and can’t travel for a while,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “I’ll live vicariously through you guys. So sad to miss this movie release and premiere, but so grateful to all the actors and the team who put this together.”

Genetic Testing Results

On Jan. 9, Hoover shared more details about her diagnosis after visiting a geneticist. The testing revealed her cancer wasn’t hereditary or linked to common causes.

“I got results back today from the geneticist that say my cancer did not come from family genes,” her Facebook post stated. “It also didn’t come from the two main causes of the cancer, which are HPV and excessive hormones. This means it was more than likely environmental/lifestyle, which is lack of exercise, poor diet and stress.”

The author added a touch of humor about lifestyle changes: “I’m happy and grateful to be alive but I hate vegetables. I hate when I have to get off the couch. I hate sweating. I hate when science is right. If you see me at the gym, don’t even tell me good job. If you see me at a restaurant eating grilled chicken and drinking water, I’m probably real mad about it.”

Career Amid Treatment

Despite health challenges, Hoover maintains an active career with multiple projects. In October, her book Regretting You became her second novel adapted for film.

Throughout 2025, production continued on her hit novel Verity, with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett photographed filming scenes in February.

Her third adaptation, Reminders of Him, releases in theaters on March 13.

New Book Release

Hoover’s latest book, Woman Down, launches on Jan. 13. The novel follows author Petra Rose, who takes a hiatus after “a viral backlash over her latest film adaptation.”

The synopsis reveals: “Branded a fraud and fame-hungry opportunist, she learned the hard way what happens when the internet turns on you. And she’s been uninspired to write ever since.”

Though the plot mirrors aspects of Hoover’s 2024 It Ends with Us film experience, she told News Of Losangeles: “There are very few similarities between my life and this book.”

The 2024 film adaptation sparked legal battles between stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, which overshadowed the movie’s release.

Hoover hopes Woman Down will help her find “new, more positive ways” of connection within the book world. “Writing can be so rewarding, but being in the public eye can also sometimes make it terrifying,” she explained. “I don’t mind walking away from it every now and then when it’s not working out, but I’ve always come back to it. So far.”
