  • Why it matters: The story shows how small wardrobe requests can hide life-changing moments

Gross told News Of Los Angeles that Robertson wanted “nice pictures of that moment” without the sweater stealing the spotlight. The couple currently lives apart while she builds her music career in Tennessee.

The sweater that almost stole the proposal

Gross had thrifted a “bright red, kindergarten-teacher-esque snowman sweater” for what she thought was a casual December date. Robertson told her they were going to “watch seals be released into the ocean at the Montauk Lighthouse” followed by lunch.

She planned to wear the vest featuring two snowmen in hats and scarves with snowflake details. Robertson gently suggested she pick something nicer for lunch.

  • He phrased it as: “Maybe you want to wear something a little nicer for when we go out to lunch?”
  • Gross was surprised because he had never commented on her “silly clothes” before
  • She changed only because he “wouldn’t budge us leaving the house”

The moment everything clicked

Once they reached the lighthouse steps, Robertson dropped to one knee while holding “the most beautiful ring.” Gross then spotted the photographer and realized why he had asked her to change.

The ring combines both their mothers’ rings with:

  • A Marquise diamond
  • Two hearts on the sides
  • A twisted band

“I felt beyond excited, but mostly, so loved,” she told News Of Los Angeles. “I knew when I said ‘yes’ to marrying him, I was saying yes to someone who truly understood me.”

Viral aftermath and wedding plans

Gross posted the Instagram video exactly one year after the proposal. She recorded it while wearing the sweater again because she missed Robertson during long-distance wedding planning.

“I never imagined it would have amassed millions of views like it did!” she said.

The couple continues to plan their September 19, 2026 wedding in Long Island while managing a long-distance relationship.
