  • Why it matters: The killing has sparked national scrutiny over immigration enforcement tactics

Becca told Minnesota Public Radio that she and Renee had stopped to support neighbors during an immigration enforcement operation that morning. “We had whistles. They had guns,” Becca said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later claimed Good had been “stalking and impeding” ICE agents. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated the agent fired because he was “fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public.”

A recent move for a fresh start

Renee and Becca had relocated from Kansas City, Missouri, to Minneapolis, settling on a quiet residential street, according to Renee’s ex-husband speaking to the Associated Press.

In her statement to MPR, Becca said they moved to “make a better life” for themselves.

“What we found when we got here was a vibrant and welcoming community, we made friends and spread joy,” she wrote. “And while any place we were together was home, there was a strong shared sense here in Minneapolis that we were looking out for each other. Here, I had finally found peace and safe harbor.”

Renee’s three children

Good was married twice before her union with Becca. Her children, now 15, 12, and 6, were born during those earlier marriages, the Associated Press reported.

Her second husband, military veteran Timmy Macklin Jr., died in 2023 at age 36 after struggling with PTSD, according to The Washington Post.

The youngest boy lived with Renee and Becca in Minneapolis; they had just dropped him off at school before the incident. Timmy’s brother, Joseph Macklin, told the Post that Renee stayed connected to the Macklin family in Tennessee so her son could know his relatives.

“We just buried his father three years ago in June, and now he lost his mother,” Joseph said. “It is definitely a tragedy no kid should have to go through at such a young age.”

Teaching compassion

Becca said the couple was raising their son to believe everyone “deserves compassion and kindness.”

“No matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness,” she told MPR, adding that Renee “lived this belief every day.”

A family friend launched a GoFundMe to support the children and Becca. It has collected close to $1.5 million since the shooting.

Tributes pour in

Becca remembers Renee as “pure love,” “pure joy,” and “pure sunshine.”

She also described Renee as a devoted Christian who understood that “all religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole.”

Renee’s mother, Donna Ganger, told The Minnesota Star Tribune her daughter was “one of the kindest people” she had ever known.

“She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being,” Ganger said.

Community response

Candles, flowers, and signs now rest at a makeshift memorial near the site of the shooting. Vigils have also taken place locally and as far away as Berlin, where mourners gathered outside the U.S. embassy on January 11, 2026.

The killing has intensified debate over immigration enforcement tactics, with Becca’s account underscoring the human cost of such operations and DHS defending the agent’s actions.

Renee’s family continues to grieve while the community rallies around her three children and Becca, vowing to honor the memory of a woman described by loved ones as pure sunshine.
