Maya Hawke questioned a hidden relationship beat during the final season shoot. The exchange appears in Netflix’s new documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, released alongside the season’s premiere.
The Laundry Room Scene
The scene in question traps Robin, Vickie, Lucas, and Max in a school laundry room while demodogs stalk the corridors. Between takes, Hawke pulled Levy aside.
“I have a question,” she said. “It hasn’t been talked about very much in any of the scenes that we’ve all been together-no one knows that we’re dating, including Caleb.”
She gestured toward McNulty, whose character Vickie had quietly begun dating Robin. Hawke wanted physical closeness to signal the secret.
“I would like to play this scene in a whisper,” she added, leaning toward McNulty to demonstrate.
Levy responded simply: “Good.” He did not address the oversight; he green-lit the acting choice.
Why Robin and Vickie Matter
Their relationship became a catalyst for Will Byers. After he spots the couple kissing in the hospital, he asks Robin about love. She recounts her first crush on a girl named Tammy. The conversation nudges Will toward self-acceptance, unlocking the powers he needs to help defeat Vecna.
Hawke’s Goodbye
Hawke joined the cast in season 3 and quickly bonded with the ensemble. During a The Hollywood Reporter interview, she recalled the table read for the finale.
“It was the happiest I’d been in any read-throughs on the show. I thought it was overwhelmingly beautiful.”
She described her last day as “my favorite day in my entire history of Stranger Things” and “one of the most heartbreaking and emotional days.”
“What’s going to stick with me most are these people,” she said. “The friendships that have come out of this that I never would have expected, more than my wildest dreams.”
Hawke likens the cast to a graduating class: “I feel bonded to these people forever… for a lot of people, that’s what their college friends are like. And for us, that’s this.”
