A Mom Makeover for Better Health: MomsLA MakeBetter

At times in life, there arises an intense desire to initiate transformation. This moment struck Sarah Auerswald and Yvonne Condes, the co-founders of MomsLA, who were determined to discover weight loss strategies tailored to their hectic lifestyles as busy mothers. This commitment led them to embark on an eight-month mission to improved wellness in August 2012, a journey they affectionately named “The MomsLA Make Better,” concluding in May 2013. They kept track of their progress via blog entries, weekly video blogs, and regular video updates.

Sarah and Yvonne joined forces with Ashley Koff, a registered dietician and author, and Holly Perkins, a fitness specialist and trainer. Collectively, they guided MomsLA – and their audience – towards a more mindful approach to consumption and an understanding of how strength training and regular physical activity could optimize our bodies’ performance.

“We weren’t reinventing ourselves; we were enhancing ourselves,” Yvonne explained.

As mothers, it’s common to prioritize our children’s health above our own. It’s even challenging for some mothers to list three routine self-care activities. Yet, at our core, we understand the reality: our capacity to care for others is hindered if we ourselves are not in good health.

Weight Loss Regimen for Career-Driven Mothers

The weight loss strategies employed by MomsLA were uncomplicated and weren’t reliant on fleeting diet trends, making them just as applicable today.

Naturally, every individual is unique, and everyone is in a different phase of life, making it vital to consult with healthcare professionals, dietitians, nutritionists, and trainers, before embarking on any weight loss or fitness regimen.

Ashley Koff, RD, guided Sarah and Yvonne to start by monitoring their food intake, promoting an initial awareness. While Sarah utilized the LoseIt app for this purpose, Yvonne preferred the traditional method of pen and paper.

Using the app provided Sarah with a distinct advantage. As their weight loss journey unfolded, she was able to monitor the nutritional intake of her meals. Koff’s dietary recommendation for Sarah included limiting her carbohydrate intake to a maximum of 20 grams per meal. She frequently encourages her clients to “eat the rainbow,” implying the consumption of a diverse range of colorful foods.

Revamping Fitness Simply

Holly Perkins comprehended that urging two occupied mothers to set aside two hours daily for workout sessions would simply incite laughter, followed by inaction. Therefore, she prompted MomsLA to commence in a modest and entirely feasible manner. A daily regimen of 20 minutes of cardio, followed by a 20-minute strength training routine on alternate days was suggested. This approach effortlessly meshed with their daily routines, allowing them to incrementally expand their workout sessions when they found extra time.

For these mothers, who were on a quest for a renewed baseline of fitness and not training for any specific sport, the regime was just right. By starting small, fitness gradually became an integral part of their daily routine, turning into a habit they continually followed.

Following their 8-month Make Better journey, both Sarah Auerswald and Yvonne Condes had achieved remarkable transformations, not only physically but also in terms of their overall health.

Remarkable Weight Loss Outcomes

Sarah Auerswald shed a remarkable total of 25 pounds on the program, and in terms of inches: she lost 7 inches from her waist, 5 inches from her hips, and 3 inches from her bust.

Sarah’s feedback on the final outcomes: “When I glance at the pictures, it’s hard for me to believe I’m looking at the same person. The transformations to my body are astounding, and even though there were struggles along the way, I truly feel the changes were relatively easy to achieve. I feel absolutely amazing, as though I have been gifted a brand-new body, and I would endorse this lifestyle to anyone who desires to improve their self-image. If I managed to do it, so can you!”

Yvonne Condes shed a total of 10 pounds, and in terms of inches: she lost 3 1/4 inches from her waist, 2 inches from her hips, and a 1/2 inch from her bust.

Yvonne’s response: “Initially, I was somewhat disheartened for not having lost more weight during the Make Better Challenge. I didn’t set a target, but I aspired to finish the challenge with rock-hard abs. However, when I saw the photographs, I was taken aback by how my body had transformed over the months. I knew I felt better, and my health had improved – my running speed had increased, and my allergies weren’t as severe this spring – but I had failed to notice the noticeable toning of my stomach, arms, buttocks, and legs. While I don’t have rock-hard abs yet, I’ve made significant strides.”
