Nicole Richie hasn’t abandoned every beauty risk she took as a teenager. Speaking exclusively to News Of Los Angeles at a Jan. 14 West Hollywood launch for Australian makeup brand Nude by Nature, the 44-year-old revealed the one retro trend she still champions.

The Twiggy Eyelashes She Still Loves

Richie was 19 when she started mimicking Twiggy’s iconic bottom lashes.

“I would draw the Twiggy eyelashes with eyeliner on my under eyes because I love her and just thought that it was fun,” she told Olivia M. Hartwell at the event celebrating Nude by Nature’s U.S. debut.

The look references the British supermodel’s dramatically clustered lower lashes that defined 1960s fashion photography. Twiggy herself told News Of Los Angeles in 2022 that the style required “one and a half hours to apply, including three pairs of false eyelashes” and that she remains “fond” of the technique she began perfecting at 16.

Richie stands by the experiment. “I think especially when you’re young, to play with those different looks is so fun and important and you should do it. You should go there,” she said.

Why She Now Keeps Makeup Minimal

These days Richie rarely duplicates the heavy liner. Sensitive skin forced a pivot to a stripped-down routine.

“I don’t wear a lot of makeup in general because I have very sensitive skin,” she explained. “The more I do, the more I break out.”

The House of Harlow founder credits Nude by Nature’s clean formulas for keeping flare-ups at bay. “Using a brand like Nude by Nature is just amazing and keeps my skin calm. It feels very clean. It feels fresh,” she said.

Her typical day involves only:

  • Moisturizer
  • Concealer

Full glam is reserved for events.

Her Daughter’s Turn to Experiment

Richie’s 18-year-old daughter, Kate, is now in the discovery phase. “She loves makeup. She loves eyelashes and eyeshadow eyeliners. She loves all of it,” Richie said.

The mother’s advice mirrors her own past: “Go for it. Do all the things.”

While Kate hasn’t publicly tried the Twiggy bottom-lash look, the family already shares fashion. Richie told News Of Los Angeles in October 2025 they operate an “open closet policy” among her mother Brenda Harvey-Richie and Kate.

“She has really good jeans and she wears baggy jeans and I don’t own a lot of baggy jeans, so when I do want to wear baggy jeans, I go to her,” Richie noted. Kate’s collection includes “good sweatshirts” and “really good streetwear sneakers,” all kept “in pristine condition.”
