After a heartbreaking loss, Yellowstone’s youngest Dutton, Kayce Dutton, steps into a new chapter as he joins an elite squad of U.S. Marshals in the CBS spinoff Marshals. The series promises gritty justice in Montana’s rugged terrain, blending family drama with high-stakes law enforcement. Fans can catch the premiere Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
The New Chapter for Kayce Dutton
The trailer opens with Kayce standing beside a covered body, his son Tate watching with a pained expression. “The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me,” Kayce says, underscoring the grief that propels him toward a new path.
Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Kayce’s wife Monica, has not been confirmed to appear in Marshals. The trailer hints that she could face a grim fate, adding a layer of uncertainty to Kayce’s journey.
The Elite Unit and Their Mission
Pete Calvin visits Kayce under the pretense of a “wellness check” and offers him a chance to join the Marshals. “I know you’ve got your own demons to conquer, but jumping back into the fire is gonna do you well,” Pete tells Kayce.
According to the official synopsis, the Marshals “bring range justice to Montana,” confronting rough terrain, wild animals, and two violent gangs as they patrol the state’s remote landscapes.
Challenges on the Trail
- Rough terrain that tests the squad’s endurance.
- Wild animals that pose unpredictable threats.
- Two violent gangs that operate in the region.
- A mission to the “zone of death” in Wyoming, prompted by Montana’s infiltration by the most violent criminal network in this hemisphere.

Family, Loyalty, and Vengeance
Kayce’s loyalty is questioned as his family’s history follows him. In the trailer, Harry remarks, “A Dutton’s personal agenda is always in service of some form of vengeance.” Kayce retorts, “Well, the Yellowstone is gone. Same for most of my family,” and adds, “And as for vengeance, the day’s still young.”
These exchanges highlight the internal conflict between duty and personal vendetta that the series will explore.
Cast and Production Notes
- Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton.
- Logan Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin.
- Mo Brings Plenty portrays Mo.
- Gil Birmingham appears as Thomas Rainwater.
- Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means round out the supporting cast.
Grimes, 42, admitted he was unsure about continuing Kayce after Yellowstone ended in 2024. “I was not sure about continuing Kayce after Yellowstone ended in 2024, especially considering fans last saw Kayce ‘back to who he really is and his soul’ after selling the Dutton land to Thomas Rainwater in the finale,” he told News Of Los Angeles. He added, “We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable. If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ – we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool.”
Grimes also praised the pitch: “But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”
Premiere Details and What to Expect
Marshals premieres Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. The series will take viewers into a world where Kayce balances the psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in Montana’s war on violence with his responsibilities to his son Tate, confidante Mo, and Thomas Rainwater from the Broken Rock reservation.
With its blend of high-stakes action, complex family dynamics, and a fresh take on Yellowstone’s legacy, Marshals promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
