Teyana Taylor is giving fans a raw look at how she and ex-husband Iman Shumpert navigate co-parenting after finalizing their divorce in July 2024.
The 35-year-old singer and actress sat down with Vanity Fair for a recent profile where she pulled back the curtain on their relationship dynamics since ending their seven-year marriage. The couple shares daughters Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., 10, and Rue Rose Shumpert, 5.
The Reality of Co-Parenting After Divorce
Taylor didn’t sugarcoat the emotional weight of their split.
“Divorce, to me, is you’re grieving the death of a living being,” she told the outlet. The comparison underscores how deeply the separation affected her, even as she and Shumpert work to maintain stability for their children.
The “Gonna Love Me” singer emphasized that having kids changes everything about how former partners interact. “I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other,” she explained.
Her commitment extends far beyond the immediate future. “At least for the next 18 years, and being the best co-parents that we can be,” Taylor added, acknowledging the long road ahead of coordinated parenting.
Despite the challenges, she wants to send a positive message about marriage itself. “I don’t want people to start feeling scared of marriage, because marriage is a beautiful thing,” she noted.
The Timeline of Their Split
The public first learned about trouble in paradise when Taylor announced their separation in September 2023 after seven years of marriage.
“In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while,” Taylor wrote on Instagram at the time. She was quick to shut down speculation about infidelity being the cause.
“To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure,” she stated. “We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children.”
The singer stressed their continued bond, writing, “Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married, we ain’t ever played with or about THAT.”

The Divorce Becomes Official
Two months after her initial announcement, Taylor confirmed the couple was officially ending their marriage. The confirmation came after their divorce filing was allegedly “leaked to the public.”
“I mind my business, don’t bother nobody & y’all know I’ve never played about my children, family & our privacy,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories that November.
Taylor was frustrated by the breach of privacy. “I have not spoken on this private matter to any media outlets or blogs etc.,” she clarified. “So everyone claiming ‘Teyana said’ didn’t get any statements directly from ME.”
She explained that the information came from “private court documents that were leaked to the public” and called it “very heartbreaking that someone would take out the time to make such a private matter public for the world to see.”
The divorce was officially finalized on July 1, 2024.
Accusations Fly After Settlement
The drama didn’t end with the final decree. Eight months after the divorce was finalized, Taylor made serious accusations against her ex-husband.
She alleged that Shumpert leaked their “divorce settlement” to different entertainment blogs. According to News Of Los Angeles‘s previous reporting, Shumpert and his attorney denied these accusations.
Taylor wasn’t buying the denials. She claimed that the “only way” blogs could have received the “alleged divorce settlements” was if he gave it to them.
The singer pointed to what she saw as a pattern of timing. “I post my little picture at the Oscars, and it does 1.4 million views. Then, the next day, all of a sudden, here come these fake divorce settlements,” she said on Instagram Live, according to Essence.
She emphasized the emotional toll of this alleged behavior. “That’s the part y’all don’t see. Every time I have something going on, there’s another story about this sealed divorce,” Taylor lamented.
Moving Forward as Co-Parents
Through all the public drama and private pain, Taylor remains focused on what matters most: their daughters. Her commitment to showing up for Junie and Rue drives every decision she makes about her relationship with Shumpert.
The 18-year timeline she mentioned isn’t arbitrary – it reflects how long they’ll need to coordinate as parents. From school events to birthdays to major life milestones, they’ll need to present a united front for their girls.
Taylor’s willingness to speak openly about the challenges serves a purpose beyond venting. By sharing her experience, she’s showing other parents that it’s possible to maintain respect and cooperation even when romantic love ends.
Her message is clear: divorce might feel like death, but family doesn’t die with marriage. For the next decade and beyond, she and Shumpert have committed to being the best co-parents possible, whatever tensions arise between them.
